Skiing and snowboarding in Stockholm

Long evenings on a warm reindeer hide by the cracking fireplace and the magical Northern Lights shimmering in the polar night sky: the Swedish winter really does have its advantages. And another asset is that snow is one hundred percent guaranteed. The first snowflakes fall in October and by February, when the country enjoys its annual ‘Sportlov’ or winter holiday, the Swedes flock en masse to the slopes. The lucky residents of Stockholm don’t even have to leave town.

Black ski runs with city views

Hammarbybacken is a small ski hill but has a lot to offer: 4 ski runs, 2 T-bar lifts, a cafeteria and a ski school with rental equipment. The ski slopes range from green to black, the longest is 750 metres and the elevation is 85 metres. On the weekends especially, Stockholmers head to this hill for some skiing and snowboarding. At the end of the day, you are back in the city centre within 20 minutes, but you can also spend the night here: book a room at the pleasant Park Inn which is located at the foot of the ski slope and on the edge of the trendy redeveloped Hammarby district.

Skiing with a view of Lake Mälaren

Drottningholm, the residential palace of the Swedish King, is one of Stockholm’s most popular attractions. Close by we find the Ekebyhovsbacken ski hill, named after the nearby 17th-century Ekebyhov castle. The hill has 3 blue slopes and 1 red; the longest is nearly 500 metres and offers enough of a challenge for an afternoon of skiing. For snowboarders there are jumps and rails, and children and beginners can enjoy the practice slope with a children's lift. The red log cabins house a ski school, rental shop and a cosy café that serves coffee and sandwiches.

Flottsbro

Winter fun for the whole family

Stockholm’s largest and most snow-sure ski slope has a length of 700 metres and an elevation of 103 meters. An added benefit is the beautiful location in a nature reserve on Lake Albysjön. Flottsbro boasts 5 ski runs, 3 lifts, a snowboard park, sledding hill, a restaurant with a full menu, a ski school with rental shop and dozens of snow cannons to guarantee crisp fresh powder snow. The ski area is open from early morning until late at night. You may also overnight at the adjacent campground in a sturdy red log cabin with kitchen, bathroom and balcony (sleeps 2 to 6 people).
